From a Village Dream to a National Vision – The Village Spice Story

Every great idea begins with a simple observation. For Anamika Shakya, co-founder of Village Spice under Smart People Tradewing, that observation was twofold: urban kitchens were losing authentic flavors, and rural women with extraordinary skills were struggling for survival. This realization sparked a movement that is now transforming lives across Uttar Pradesh.

Anamika’s childhood was steeped in tradition. She grew up surrounded by the rich aromas of hand-ground spices and the wisdom of village elders who passed down their culinary secrets. But as she stepped into the modern world, she noticed how these traditions were fading. Spices, once symbols of purity and flavor, were being replaced by mass-produced, chemical-laden alternatives. At the same time, she saw women in her village working tirelessly yet remaining financially dependent. The gap between untapped rural talent and urban demand for authentic products became glaringly clear—and Village Spice was born.

Launched on January 1, 2025, Village Spice has grown rapidly despite humble beginnings. Operating in over 50 villages, the brand works with rural women to produce hand-ground, chemical-free spices that retain their natural aroma and health benefits. For consumers, Village Spice isn’t just a product—it’s a story of authenticity and empowerment.

What sets Village Spice apart is its unique approach to business. Unlike traditional companies driven purely by profit, Village Spice integrates purpose into its core. Every packet sold contributes to a woman’s livelihood, every rupee earned strengthens a local economy, and every product preserves a dying tradition. This “authenticity with purpose” has resonated deeply with conscious consumers.

The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Convincing villagers to trust a new initiative, ensuring quality consistency, and competing in a crowded spice market required resilience. Anamika’s guiding principle through it all has been patience and persistence. “When you build something for people, not just for profit, they eventually believe in you,” she says.

Drawing inspiration from Dr. Verghese Kurien, who revolutionized India’s dairy industry, Anamika aims to create a similar impact with spices. Her vision is bold: expand Village Spice nationwide, introduce new product lines like traditional masalas and herbal blends, adopt eco-friendly packaging, and empower over 10,000 rural women to become self-reliant.

Village Spice is more than a brand; it’s a movement to redefine entrepreneurship. It proves that businesses rooted in purpose can thrive while making a real difference. For Anamika, success isn’t about financial milestones—it’s about the smiles of women who can now educate their children, the pride in communities that see their traditions valued, and the trust of customers who believe in their story.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is as heartfelt as her mission: “Start with what you have, even if it’s small. Purpose fuels perseverance, and perseverance builds success. Never underestimate the power of a dream that helps others.”

Village Spice began as a village dream. Today, it’s on its way to becoming a national vision—one that blends heritage, empowerment, and hope in every pinch of spice.
