Our life is nothing but a series of risks that we take. Sometimes they bear a positive result, sometimes they bear negative results. However, the faith that you have in yourself, the passion you have put to complete that task is what makes all the difference. Trying something new can also be risky. The chances of succeeding are always 50-50.
That is what a young researcher thought when he set out on a new journey to fulfill his dream. What dream? His dream is to contribute more to society by finding an efficient way to overcome the global energy demand with a clean and profitable energy source. Dr. Vikas Sharma completed his B.Sc in PCM from M.J.P.R.U Bareilly and M.Sc. in Physics from Jamia Millia Islamia.
While pursuing his masters in Jamia Millia, he understood the gap that lay in the surging demand of efficient production of energy and the authority failing to find a proficient way. Taking the initiation on his own, he started going ahead in a path that is both rocky and full of obstacles and uncertainties.
Believing in his talent and knowledge which he gained during his masters, Dr. Sharma cleared CSIR-NET and GATE and gained himself a spot in the doctoral research program in IIT Madras. Though it was tough, he did not give up.
“It was the biggest challenge in my life carrying lots of uncertainty as sometimes you try your hand on something new ‘hits’ and sometimes it ‘misses’.”
Even though he knew that there was a fifty-fifty chance of him coming on top with his ideas, he kept giving his all till he achieved his goal successfully.
“But I tremendously believe in doing hard work and taking a gross risk because the more the risk, the more the gain.”
The main aspect of research is to fulfill the gap that lay in the society, to unearth the unknown, to give that piece of knowledge materialization through which a sense of awareness can be created. Dr. Sharma’s research topic seeks to establish a foundation for a low-cost solar cell with enhanced effectiveness.
“Due to several challenges in energy production like high cost and less efficiency, my research motive is to reduce the cost of solar cells along with enhanced efficiency.”
Setting his views on producing environmentally friendly energy, he worked on dye-sensitized solar cells as well as semiconductor sensitized solar cells configuration. This helped him to steer his knowledge towards a path where he could create a low-cost solar cell with the ability to produce maximum clean energy input.
“The focus of my study is to produce clean energy (carbon-free) at less cost so that it will be environmentally friendly.”
The proposal behind the concept that would initiate a process of introducing a ‘cost-effective way to synthesize the materials for energy applications which will be useful for industrial applications’ took him far. His research helped him win the Best Scholars Award by National Education Brilliance Awards, Young Researcher Award, and Research Excellence Award by Institute of Scholars (InSc).
Understanding the need to be at the top of the pinnacle, he knows that through hard work and dedication, one can reach that. It was the sheer brilliance and dedication of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam that helped him find the inspiration to continue his Ph.D. By pouring his all into his studies and dedicating his soul to the research, he found the way to success. Encouraged by his result found in the masters, he gained the ray of hope he was trying to find.
“In my Post graduation time when I was working on the project, I found interesting results that gave me the confidence and direction to pursue a Ph.D. and I enjoyed the journey of Research.”
