It is needless to mention that we are a specialised team of best interior designers that can give your space a wonderful look.”
The company works around the philosophy of holistic and sensitive context-driven spatial relationships of spaces and people, and thereby encourages social cohesion and cultivate responsive architecture.
Decorlab’s Design Director & co-founder Rajdip is a passionate professional. He is a creature of habit, and prefers to do things that bring joy and comfort on a daily basis. As a student, he wasn’t a bright candidate and always lagged behind in academics. But also excelled in the creative aspects of the curriculum. Hence, he always wanted to work in the creative field. And the biggest driving force to pursue a career in creative field was the idea that, over time, a person might perish, but the art he creates lives on forever. Decorlab was founded and established by his father, Raja Sinha. Previously, it was only an interior design firm. Later on, however, he incorporated the firm’s architecture department. The idea and concept of parametric design, which is comparatively less known in West Bengal and India were also introduced by him.
Rajdip proudly reveals that his firm is currently in charge of designing and managing over 30-40 sites across India, with future plans of expanding it internationally is in the cards. According to him, earlier architecture was considered a necessity since having a roof over one’s head as protection against natural disaster was a basic requirement. However, with the passage of time, architecture has come to be regarded not only as a necessity but also as a luxury. In the projects, that they take up, they try to abide by the principles of green architecture thus building structures that are environmentally friendly.
Decorlab is a one-stop-solution and offers high-end, comprehensive, and bilingual design services for all residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. It offers everything from flooring to space planning and design to custom furniture and fixtures, from inspiration to installation. It strives to provide every project a design-thinking approach with in-house expertise and experience. In order to provide better and more innovative designs, they enjoy experimenting with different materials and adapting to new technologies and trends. Further, the firm has ambitious plans to expand and improve its design studio. It intends to launch new verticals such as the BIM department studio, the art and artist department, a metaverse-focused vertical for designers, and a third for intern project activity in their studio.
Rajdip considers architect Zaha Hadid, the pioneer from Baghdad, as his inspiration. She was nothing short of a modern-day superwoman. The core ideology behind Hadid’s structures was the use of parametric and computational design tools and methods, and Rajdip too has the same area of interest. To be a woman from a developing country who excelled in spite of the odds is truly inspiring.
In his entrepreneurial journey, Rajdip did face few difficulties. Clients are always hesitant to hand over their sites to his, as he was relatively young. Another difficulty was coordinating with contractors and clients. Whenever it comes to innovating with a design or trying to do something new, more often than not, either the contractors or the clients are unwilling to experiment or take on challenges. Procurement of good-quality materials and skilled labour has been a struggling area too. Workshops have played an important role in closing communication gaps and getting contractors on the same page. To acquire materials, they try to reach out to well-known, trusted vendors who can ensure quality over local vendors. And, rather than attempting to outsource labourers, the firm is now focusing on developing own team of labourers and masons who are familiar with the company’s needs and goals.
A jewellery showroom in Patna, which he designed in the initial days of his career will always remain close to his heart. Rajdip believes that the entire design process cannot be initiated or completed without a client. And though it’s less spoken of, psychology does play a major part in interior design. Design elements, such as lighting, colours, configuration, scale, proportions, acoustics, and materials, all have the ability to influence an individual’s senses and produce a range of emotions and behaviours. Thus, knowing the tastes and preferences of the client and guiding them with our knowledge of design is very important to building a great space.
Decorlab’s great effort has been duly recognised and was awarded the ‘Best Design in Budding Entrepreneurs’ in the prestigious Hafele competition. The other one was at the global India Business Forum where Rajdip was awarded the ‘National Award for Business Excellence and International Business Seminar 2023’.
