In a bid to provide a more transparent, driver-friendly alternative to existing ride-hailing services, Mumbai-based autorickshaw unions and tech players have come together to launch Yatri Mitra, a new auto booking app tailored specifically for commuters in Mumbai and Thane. The app is the result of a collaboration between Seva Sarathi Autorickshaw Taxi & Transport Union (SSATTU) and Metazen Labs, a software development firm based in Thane.
Yatri Mitra officially launched in beta mode today and is already in the process of onboarding auto drivers onto the platform. Unlike mainstream aggregator apps that charge commissions on each ride, Yatri Mitra operates on a zero-commission model, aiming to empower auto drivers while offering commuters a seamless booking experience.

As part of the model, auto drivers will pay a flat fee of INR 25 per day to access and accept ride requests through the app. This approach not only removes the high commission burden often criticized in traditional aggregator models but also promotes driver earnings stability. SSATTU, a long-standing union representing the interests of autorickshaw drivers, will play a critical role in bringing drivers onto the platform and ensuring their rights and participation in decision-making are preserved.
The app is owned and managed by Metazen Labs, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kaizen Infotech Solutions. Kaizen is a well-established IT solutions provider with a strong client base, including prominent entities like the Income Tax Department of India, Godrej Enterprises Group, and Thane Municipal Corporation. Their entry into the mobility sector marks a significant diversification from their usual public and enterprise IT services, adding credibility and technical expertise to the Yatri Mitra initiative.
According to the developers, Yatri Mitra has been designed with a simple interface that is easy to use for both drivers and commuters. The app aims to ensure fair pricing, with rides being charged based on government-regulated meter fares, helping curb fare manipulation while avoiding surge pricing practices. Additionally, features such as driver ratings, GPS-based tracking, and SOS emergency options will be included to ensure safety and trust on both sides of the platform.
For commuters in Mumbai and Thane—cities plagued by erratic auto availability and fare haggling—Yatri Mitra promises a more reliable, community-driven alternative that also benefits the driver community. By not involving large commissions and corporate middlemen, the model intends to keep the auto ecosystem more equitable.
The beta rollout will allow the team behind Yatri Mitra to gather feedback, fine-tune its features, and improve driver and user experience before a wider public launch. With the involvement of a strong autorickshaw union and experienced IT backing, the platform holds potential to disrupt the existing mobility landscape—offering a win-win for both auto drivers and commuters.
If successful, Yatri Mitra could set a precedent for similar localized, union-supported mobility solutions across other Indian cities.
