Building the Invisible Engine: Alok Kumar’s Role in India’s AI Infrastructure Story

As artificial intelligence becomes central to economic competitiveness and national security, the true differentiator among nations lies not in applications, but in infrastructure. Behind every intelligent system is a foundation of compute power, data frameworks, and governance-ready platforms. In India, where AI adoption is accelerating across sectors, Alok Kumar, Founder and CEO of Thore Network Pvt Ltd, is building this invisible engine—quietly but decisively.

Alok Kumar’s journey into deep technology entrepreneurship did not begin with artificial intelligence as a trend, but with a structural insight. Early in his professional life, he observed that while India possessed immense intellectual capital, it lacked accessible AI infrastructure. High compute costs, dependence on foreign platforms, and limited access to advanced tooling threatened to slow domestic innovation. Rather than focusing on surface-level solutions, Alok chose to address the root—building the systems that enable intelligence at scale.

Founded in 2018 and strengthened significantly in alignment with India’s evolving AI policy ecosystem, Thore Network was conceptualised as an infrastructure-first organisation. Headquartered in Kolkata, the company operates with a clear mandate: to democratise access to AI compute, support indigenous language intelligence, and reduce India’s reliance on external technology ecosystems. Its work reflects a long-term vision where infrastructure precedes innovation.

One of Thore Network’s most significant interventions is its Government-aligned GPU Voucher Marketplace. AI development requires intensive computational resources, yet access to GPUs remains a major bottleneck for startups and researchers. By creating a structured, policy-aligned marketplace for compute access, Thore Network enables innovation to emerge from talent rather than capital. This initiative has the potential to unlock AI development across regions and institutions that were previously excluded.

Beyond compute infrastructure, Thore Network is focused on building AI systems that reflect India’s linguistic and societal diversity. Its Indic AI initiative, BhashaSetu, is designed to enable multilingual intelligence across Indian languages. By prioritising inclusivity, the platform ensures that AI adoption does not remain confined to English-speaking users but reaches broader communities. This focus on language equity positions Thore Network as a key contributor to India’s digital inclusion efforts.

The organisation’s portfolio also includes applied intelligence platforms such as MaargAI, which addresses road safety through AI-driven insights, and Insights.ai, a knowledge discovery platform that supports decision-making across sectors. These platforms illustrate how infrastructure-led innovation can translate into practical, real-world impact—enhancing safety, accessibility, and efficiency.

What distinguishes Thore Network is its close alignment with India’s policy and governance frameworks. The organisation actively collaborates with national initiatives such as IndiaAI, AI Kosh, AIGR, PRIP Pharma-MedTech, and NCIIPC. This integration reflects Alok Kumar’s belief that AI infrastructure must be built responsibly, with governance, security, and scalability embedded from inception. Rather than working in isolation, Thore Network positions itself as a strategic enabler within India’s AI ecosystem.

The entrepreneurial journey behind this mission demanded resilience. Building infrastructure without heavy capital backing required discipline, speed, and precision. Alok Kumar adopted an asset-light execution model, focusing on partnerships and rapid deployment. This approach allowed Thore Network to scale responsibly while maintaining efficiency and relevance in a fast-evolving technological landscape.

Recognition has followed sustained impact. Alok Kumar has received honours such as the National Icon Award 2024 and Entrepreneur of the Year (Tech & AI) 2025 at the regional level. Yet, for him, success remains measured by outcomes—how many innovators gain access to compute, how effectively language barriers are addressed, and how much India progresses toward AI sovereignty.

Looking ahead, Thore Network is preparing for a new phase of expansion. With plans to scale compute infrastructure, deepen Indic AI capabilities, and move toward IPO readiness by 2026–27, the organisation is positioning itself for long-term relevance. The ambition is not merely growth, but preparedness—building systems capable of supporting AI innovation for over a billion users.

Through Thore Network, Alok Kumar is shaping the foundations of India’s AI future. His work reinforces a defining truth of the digital age: nations that invest in infrastructure do not follow technological change—they lead it.
