After trying her luck across various other professions, Dr Srimathy Kesan, finally settled after formation of Space Kidz India. An international travel conference to Florida in 2009 changed everything for good and the dynamic entrepreneurial characteristic of Srimathy grabbed the right opportunity to set up her organisation for providing experiential learning in the field of science, technology, art and culture. It was constant motivation and support from her friend Reema Sisodia that made her to decide to take the plunge in opening up something of her own.
Space Kidz India is world’s first organization to launch Satellites through high school and college students. They are ambassadors to the NASA, ESA and GCTC Russia space camps, and pioneers in organizing international workshops. Established in 2012, with R&D as its spine, Space Kidz is trying to make a difference in the life of talented kids by providing the right platform and exposure. It bridges the gap between students and the space industry by creating opportunities and providing hands-on experience. It’s making a huge impact and driving young students towards a new Space revolution in India.
Entrepreneurial life isn’t smooth for Srimathy who faced lot challenges initially as she found it hard to convince parents to send their kids to the US. Furthermore paperwork and processing US visas for children was equally challenging. Despite the challenges, she managed to mobilize as many as 108 children from 8th to 12th standard. Even before starting Space Kidz, Srimathy toggled roles as travel agent, fashion choreography, script writing, and voice over artist etc.
Ambitious, focused and sincere Srimathy feels “Immense passion, perseverance and hard work apart from the finances are the key ingredients for any business to start and excel.” According to her, space industry is vast and there’s huge opportunity for her organization to make a mark. There is no private space organisation in India which has launched as many balloonsats and satellites as being launched by Space Kidz. It is also the first to build and launch the world’s smallest satellite and standing unique in the country with innovative space solutions and missions. The two day meet in the US representing India among 10,000 delegates in the international travel conference at Florida encouraged Srimathy to come back to her hometown in Chennai and create Space Kidz which now successfully excels in its own field under the able guidance of Srimathy who signs off by saying
“The journey of entrepreneurship is an extremely beautiful one. I would attribute it to giving birth to a child, ten months of pain that follows one beautiful outcome. So whatever challenges we face during the initial phase and then as we grow there are beautiful moments that we could cherish forever. As a woman myself I would like to encourage fellow women to become entrepreneurs in whatever small way they can.”
