Founders of Design Grid Studio, Mirza Rizwan Baig began his journey in the school itself. He had been a student of Chirec Public School and was a part of it from KG till 12th grade. From class 10th, Baig developed an interest in buildings and their planning and façade designs. He used to observe the structures/buildings around him, especially the planning of his school, being one of the finest schools in the city.
He used to analyze every space it had and tried to understand why it was planned the way it was. Building elevations and façade treatment too were a part of his observation and he tried to think if these structures could have been designed better. This interest of Baig kept developing and he finally got into Architecture which gave him real insight into the subject.
After completing his graduation, Baig worked for a company exploring different types of projects, ranging from residential, commercial, and institutional wherein his involvement had been in both the planning stage and also the interiors. Since the time he had developed an interest in architecture back in school, Baig had a dream of having his firm work on different project types, which today feels like a dream come true.
He considers this to be just the beginning and that there is more to explore and learn and grow in the near future. Baig founded Design Grid Studio with his co-founder Paras Bharti in 2019. Today, they have more than 2 dozen projects, including villas, gated communities, apartments, and commercial stores.
Baig believes that giving the right design and complete hand-holding through the project in itself is a solution on a micro level. The brand’s USP has been that it replicates exactly what has been finalized in its concept.
Ar. Anwar Aziz, who Baig considers his inspiration, was the person whom he had done an internship with. Baig learned the meaning of passion from him. He learnt what detailing means, and that there is nothing small or big, work is just work, and it’s supposed to be done with the same energy.
According to Baig, an entrepreneur’s journey is never without obstacles and struggles. It’s an integral part and one must be ready to handle them and believe that these obstacles are there to make you a better professional and will raise the bar every time you tackle the issues and solve them.
He has learnt that you should never be in your comfort zone, make the uncomfortable zone your comfort zone and move ahead. If you remain in your comfort zone, you will never grow. Push yourself because no one else is going to do that for you!!
He also believes that family plays a very important role in your entrepreneurial journey. Baig’s wife, being an Architect herself knew what this journey would be like in the beginning, hence, the necessary support was always there and it had a positive impact on his work and mental status.
Baig thinks that the ability to maintain good relationships with clients is his strong suit. Being in the service industry, it’s absolutely not easy to have happy clients, but his brand has repeated clients and that says it all. The renovation of the Lasa Lamsa tea store is a project that is closest to Baig’s heart.
Understanding the psychology of a client is the most important thing before commencing any work. As your designs will depend on the input given by them and their background. What his team does before starting any work is that the professionals spend a lot of time with the clients casually, to know more about them and get a deeper insight into their lifestyle and standards, which makes it easy to give them what they want.
Lastly, Baig believes that success is not a comfortable procedure. You must come out of your comfort zone to taste success, hence, learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
