Komal Singh
It is often said that people carry multitudes within them. It is a shame that most of us live our lives unaware of those multitudes, and we often tread a singular path, feeling ourselves eroding as time passes. Komal Singh has emphatically chosen a different path, that of pursuing her passion for creating a life of happiness and abundance for herself.
Komal’s life started as what in our society is the normalized fairly-tale for women as well as men; she graduated from a premier Indian private institution before earning her Masters of Law from Switzerland and working at a top-tier law firm. She never could find happiness in it, however, and she saw her mental and physical health declined rapidly with an increasing workload and rising stress levels. It was at this juncture in her life that she revisited her love for dancing, which in light of her concern for her physical and mental health, guided her to becoming a Zumba instructor and eventually studying to become a fitness trainer and nutritionist.
I was really worried about my deteriorating health working under stressful and busy environment. After eventually joining the gym, my passion for dance made me gravitate towards dance fitness classes, which I discovered was great for my mental and physical health.
Today she runs a holistic fitness center at her hometown of Jamshedpur, where she does the arduous yet fulfilling and important job of reframing the local people’s perception of a fitness-oriented lifestyle. She believes that health can never just be restricted to aesthetics or qualitative tests; mental health and physical integrity is just as important. She has accordingly named her fitness center ‘LYS (Love YourSelf) Fitness Center.’ She gives just as much importance to yoga and meditation as she does to strength training and conditioning. She practices what she preaches too; today, she is happier and fitter than ever before, and she works with the same passion with which she used to dance since when she was 5 years old.
I felt like I had forgotten myself. I am a happy person now, as I love my new version of me.
Her work ethic is formidable. She has a great sense of clarity about her past and experiences and is extremely grounded too. She realizes that she could only achieve all this because she decided to go to K11 and learn about fitness and nutrition while still working, even though that meant that she had to work double as hard. She also showed her sense of clarity and reliable business acumen by choosing to move away from the hyper-competitive Pune and instead establish her fitness center in her hometown, where she could ensure for herself, more financial success as well as more fulfillment.
I was more confident about my venture, which was a need for the market where people were just getting aware of fitness, and it was the time to make them understand that fitness is a lifestyle.
Her hard work has paid off substantially; her institution is already recognized as the best holistic fitness center in her city. For a person who completed her graduation with a newborn baby, pursued her masters while being away from her own child and then had to balance all that while starting over, that is one great legacy to live by.
