Dr Pradeep K Kurapati – Founder, Kurapati Children’s Hospital, Khammam

It all started in 2011, when on his family’s insistence Dr Pradeep Kumar Kurapati left behind his teaching profession at Khammam Medical College and started a paediatric nursing home by the name of “Kurapati Children’s Hospital”. It has always been his wish to serve children and after completion of MD and serving his stint as a professor, he established the hospital which now is the only go-to address for the suffering kids of Khammam locality. It was during his MD days that Dr Kurapati was moved by the death of a child suffering from Thalassemia, which is a blood related genetic disorder where the patient suffering from this disease needs blood transfusion every fortnight throughout their life. That’s the day when he made up his mind to do something for these unfortunate children.

However, while practicing he was shocked to find that around 250 kids were suffering from this deadly disease in and around Khammam district. That’s when he vouched to work for these underprivileged kids relentlessly. As a gesture of humanity, these kids are not charged with any consultation fees even for other health problems. Dr Kurapati informs us that

“Every day around 6-7 children get blood transfusion in our centre. For this we started creating awareness about its inheritance and the importance of blood donation. We regularly organize awareness camps in educational institutions and encourage them for blood donation. Each unit of blood donated to these children increases their lifespan by a month or 3 weeks.”

Dr Kurapati is also attached with few NGOs and is known for his philanthropic works. NGO named “SHRIKA’ – society for girl education which works for the educational and academic needs of girls coming from poor family background. SHRIKA takes the responsibility of these girls for their education from kindergarten to PG. Another NGO named YUVAM that was started in 2019 for the youth for their employment guidance and induce national integrity in them and for regular blood donations to the needy. YUVAM took part in many voluntary activities during the pandemic and lockdown times, and supplied regular groceries to the poor and needy and to private school teachers who were not getting salaries during the pandemic and also to the cultural artists.

As a successful doctor, Kurapati always believes in 3S – Service, Sincerity and Sacrifice, which has been the formula for a happy and satisfied life. He says,

“Life is not a cake walk. The more you prosper the more you face challenges and what matters is how you face and overcome these challenges. Let your success speak about what you are. Life is a game where success is about winning appreciation, it’s all about winning a battle within yourself.”

Started his career at the age of 28, Dr Kurapati has always taken inspiration from his parents. His mother has always taught him the joy of GIVING rather than focusing on TAKING.

For his exemplary service to mankind, he has been flooded with awards and recognitions. Some of them are – Vaidyaratna’ Award 2020, Best doctor award consecutively for 2018 & 2019, Balabandhu award 2018 by Childline, Sevaratna award 2018 by Balotsav committee,  Visista Seva Puraskar 2017 by Philanthropic Society, Yanam, Pondicherry, Best Motivator Award for blood donations by Indian Red Cross society, Hyderabad, and IMA Yuva Leader award from IMA headquarters, Delhi.

Besides being a paediatric, he dons several hats. Dr Kurapati is Director for Sri Abhaya Hospitals, and Director for Vijayasree Blood Bank, Khammam. He is also the honourable member of district legal service authority (DLSA, Khammam), President of Telangana Women T20 cricket association, Camp coordinator of Indian Red Cross society, Khammam, and President of Rotary Club of Stambhadri 2021 -22. We need more such doctors in our society and wish Dr Kurapati all the best.
