ShareChat & Moj ordered to remove Zee’s content from repositories by Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court has directed social media platform ShareChat and short video platform MojApp to take down 134 film clips and recordings from their libraries as Zee Entertainment Enterprises holds rights the rights to these clips.
The court also directed the two platforms to put in place a mechanism to prevent further uploading of Zee’s content without the necessary permissions.
The order came in a lawsuit filed by Zee against ShareChat and MojApp for copyright infringement. Zee had alleged that the two platforms were hosting a large number of its copyrighted clips without permission.
ShareChat and MojApp had argued that they were not liable for the copyright infringement as they were merely hosting user-generated content. However, the court rejected this argument and said that the two platforms had a responsibility to take down copyrighted content when they were notified of it.
The court’s order is a significant victory for Zee, which has been fighting for years to protect its copyright. It is also a reminder to social media platforms that they need to be more vigilant in preventing the uploading of copyrighted content.
