Founder of Handbook Architects and Interior Designers, Ar. Sanjana Srihari has worked on numerous projects throughout her work journey.
The first residence that deserves a mention is that of Dr Manjunath. The clients are a couple who are both practitioners in the medical field; this is a crucial aspect to design, as springing from this aspect alone are a plethora of requests that make this design their home.
The site of this residence is a 2478 sqft North and east-facing corner site located in Vijayanagar, Mysore. The clients requested a design that would allow for a good balance of privacy and socializing, coming from a packed lifestyle. The brief also mentioned that they wished for ample natural lighting, ventilation, and hassle-free yet green pockets.
It also came to light that the clients were movie aficionados. Keeping all this in mind, the design produced was a Vastu-compliant plan which incorporated abundant sky-lights, small pockets of green tucked away, broad balconies and some pockets to entertain.
The boon was that the corner site faced the North and east directions. The design, therefore, incorporated the balconies and larger openings on the North elevation; This allowed the diffused north light to enter the house in abundance, while such large fenestrations were restricted on the east elevation.
Starting at the crux of any project, be it architecture or life, is a plan. But as crucial as it is, how often has anything gone according to plan? At Handbook, however, it always does. The irony, though, is how it came to be. Ar. Sanjana Srihari had other plans of moving abroad.
Things took a turn when a cafe design project came her way. That was a defining moment where she saw herself as an architect practising and catering to the one thing that seemed so unavailable.
It usually happens that there is a misconception about her field and its practitioners being elitist. Misconception, as it may be, solely exists because of the portrayal and issues in approachability. These were the two issues in the market that Ar. Sanjana wanted to address and eradicate.
So many professionals prefer to practice from their places of residence. However, the drawback is the invasion of privacy that happens with footfall in a quiet home. The manifestation of Handbook as a firm was affordable yet contemporary designs for all clients, devoid of premonitions.
Her concept was to work towards a client-centric design and delivery. And it is a proud statement to claim that the Handbook has stayed true to its initial concept and manifestation. And so it was structured and established on the 4th of December, 2019.
Handbook Architecture and interior designs have completed over 50 projects and 24 running projects of different groupings, be it residential, commercial, hospitality and retreat, renovations, landscaping, interiors, retail and more.
The finesse that seems to draw more people in with Handbook appears to be the creative residential designs that, true to form, are client-centric and functional. Thus, Sanjana’s entrepreneurial journey is commendable and we’re sure there’s something you can learn from it.
