In a recent survey conducted across diverse demographics in India, a striking consensus emerged regarding the handling of deepfake content on social media platforms. The survey results indicate a robust demand for a swift response, with the majority of respondents expressing a preference for a 24-hour deadline for the removal of deepfake content.

Background:

Deepfake technology, which involves the creation of realistic-looking but fabricated audio and video content, has raised concerns globally due to its potential misuse, ranging from misinformation to privacy infringements. As social media platforms become hotbeds for the dissemination of such content, the need for effective moderation measures has become increasingly evident.

Survey Methodology:

The survey, conducted over the past month, targeted a diverse sample of Indian social media users across age groups, regions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Participants were asked to share their perspectives on the prevalence of deepfakes, the potential harm they pose, and the role of social media platforms in curbing their dissemination.

Key Findings:

  1. High Awareness and Concern: The survey found a high level of awareness among respondents regarding the existence and potential risks associated with deepfake content. A significant majority expressed concern about the impact of deepfakes on individuals, businesses, and societal trust.
  2. Demand for Swift Action: A notable revelation was the strong consensus on the need for prompt action by social media platforms. Over 80% of respondents advocated for a stringent 24-hour deadline for platforms to identify and remove deepfake content once reported.
  3. User Empowerment: Respondents emphasized the importance of user empowerment in identifying and reporting deepfakes. Many suggested the implementation of user-friendly reporting mechanisms coupled with awareness campaigns to educate users about the risks and consequences
