Ar. Vaibhavi Patel, an architect with a passion for sustainable design and cultural heritage preservation, is making her mark in the world of architecture. With seven years of experience, she founded Working_Hands Design Studio in 2018, driven by a desire to merge creative freedom with a sustainable design philosophy.
Graduating from CEPT University, Vaibhavi’s academic interests centered on the structural configurations of early temple and mosque architecture in Gujarat, setting the stage for a career focused on the intersection of culture and functionality. Over the years, she’s contributed to over 20 architectural projects, with a particular emphasis on designing spaces that honor both heritage and the environment.
For Vaibhavi, the core of her architectural approach is functionality. “I believe that design should meet the practical needs of the people who use it, while staying rooted in sustainability,” she explains. Her studio specializes in integrating modern design with sustainable practices, ensuring that each project addresses the unique needs of the client, the local culture, and the environment.
One of her most meaningful projects to date is a home-stay being built in the Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh. The design blends traditional Himachali Kath-Khuni architecture with contemporary sensibilities, using locally sourced materials to create a structure that is both culturally significant and climate-responsive.
Starting her own practice was not without its struggles. “Balancing client expectations with design feasibility was challenging,” she admits. Overcoming these obstacles required a commitment to communication, adaptability, and creative problem-solving.
For Vaibhavi, understanding client psychology is just as critical as architectural knowledge. “The success of a project hinges on how well it meets the client’s needs, vision, and aspirations,” she says.
Vaibhavi is a strong advocate for sustainable and green architecture. She sees the shift towards eco-friendly design as an essential step for the profession and for the future of our planet. Her approach combines practicality with environmental consciousness, ensuring that her designs contribute positively to the world around them.
For emerging architects, Vaibhavi offers a simple yet powerful message: “Stay curious, be open to new ideas, and design with purpose and passion.” Her career is a testament to how thoughtful design can change lives, preserve cultures, and contribute to a more sustainable world.
