Who do we find as our ideal employees? We find the hardworking, diligent and dedicated ones as the most suitable for our organisation. But, sometimes, there are other ways too- the smart ways. There could be some lazy employees who could be equally valuable for your organisation.
Before knowing the advantages of a lazy employee, let’s figure out the disadvantages of hard working and diligent employees. They are mostly oriented towards achieving their tasks and are in action and seldom, they do it before they think. They probably do whatever they have been asked for and never re-think about the strategies and goals that have been framed. They just do, and would never think of better ideas.
But, today’s competitive industry demands creative, innovative, problem-solving output minds, that is something more than diligence.
“I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m lazy, and my company thrives on laziness.
I’m not talking about lying-in-bed-all-day-while-playing-Candy-Crush laziness; I’m talking about efficiency. I’m talking about proactively avoiding issues and speedily addressing the ones that do pop up. I’m talking about providing such great service that our clients never feel the need to contact us.
This is the right kind of lazy — the one that finds the quickest, simplest way to accomplish complicated tasks. And if you’re reading this, I’m sure you already know how often complications arise when launching a business.”

Extending and diversifying this concept more, here’s a list of reasons of why we should hire lazy employees:
-
- Creativity: A lazy mind always focuses on simplifying the tasks. It doesn’t go according to the orders at the very initial stage. It questions and analyses the working of the task. And, this happens to stand as the basics of creativity. The detailed analysis of the task allows for open-ended options rather than sticking to traditional methods of doing a particular task.
If we want innovation and efficiency (and we do), we need to be open to “thinking lazy.” –Success

- Avoid Contextual Blindness: In contextual blindness, “you have mental blind spots that warp our perspective about aspects of our lives or work, impairing our decision-making and judgment.” –Success
Basically, we have so much knowledge of doing a particular task but fail to innovate or recognise alternatives. This is where our competitors create an edge over us.
In this case, we need lazy individuals, who could question, “Why?”, “Is this the only way?” or “Do we really need it?” that could induce the organisation to re-think.
“My company works with clients all the time who think they’re presenting us with difficult (or even impossible) tasks. But time and time again, my lazy staff members impress them with their ability to identify the solution, divide the duties, and get the job done in the blink of an eye.” – Business Collective
- Hard work isn’t always smart work: Hard work claims at doing action but smart work focuses on a little more thinking. Most of the organisations have to ensure that the employees are working effectively and not just hard. Every organisation wants results that aim towards the growth of the organisation. Here, comes the role of lazy employees, where they think creatively for the organisation, have alternative and simplified ideas of doing the tasks.
PERKS OF A LAZY TEAM
- Lazy employees present a viable and a functional option to carry out a task or project.
- They have the ability to create something unique in a short span of time.
- The right kind of lazy employees can actually drive your organisation to the path of growth, as things would progress faster than you could ever imagine.

HIRING THE RIGHT KIND OF LAZY EMPLOYEES
Not every kind of lazy is suitable for your organisation. Some of them are real procrastinators which will bring no good to your organisation. Instead, you should search for those people who are practical, innovative and smart. So, to know the right lazy employees for your organisation, you should consider the following 3 P’s:
-
- Perspective: Many people have the perspective of gaining the learning experience of new things. They have their interests and hobbies outside the organisation. This doesn’t mean that they don’t take their job seriously. They aim at completing their tasks effectively and efficiently and then head towards the things they love.
- Persistent: The wrong type of lazy employees tend to procrastinate work whereas the right kind of lazy employees persistently search for different alternatives for doing a work in less amount of time without compromising with its quality. These employees look for healthy shortcuts which can prove to be helpful for the entire organisation. They are the innovative minds that creates solutions rather than working on the traditional solutions.
- Proactive: Lazy employees are full of enthusiasm to accomplish their tasks efficiently. They have the eagerness to solve the problems as soon as they arise. They are productive and avoid creating a pile of tasks for them as they are not in the favour of working continuously, day and night.
“I never have to worry about deadlines with my lazy staff members; they love to take the initiative and find their own way to get the job done. If they find themselves tinkering with something for too long, they’re not afraid to rip it to shreds and start over in search of a quicker route.” –Business Collective
