I am AR. Niral Patel, the founder and director of Niral Patel & Associates, an architectural firm established in 2014, when I was 35 years old. Today, I am 45 and proud of what we have achieved in the past decade, expanding our reach across Maharashtra with a turnover of over 50 lakh rupees. My journey into architecture, entrepreneurship, and design has been shaped by my family and professional experiences, as well as my personal drive to contribute to the evolving landscape of the construction industry.
I come from a family deeply rooted in the world of development and construction. Being surrounded by builders and developers throughout my life, I was naturally drawn to the field of architecture. I always had a fascination for how spaces are planned, designed, and brought to life. Growing up in this environment allowed me to gain firsthand knowledge of the complexities involved in the development process. The idea of creating something permanent, something that contributes to the way people live and work, was compelling to me. This passion laid the foundation for my decision to pursue architecture as a profession.
The start of my architectural journey was not without its challenges. I began my professional career working with various firms, gaining the necessary experience and skills required to excel in this field. However, my big break came when my business partner, Hetal Desai, offered me the opportunity to take on my first independent project. This was a defining moment in my career, and it gave me the confidence and recognition I needed to establish my firm. Hetal has been a great support throughout my journey, and we continue to work together, leading large-scale projects across Maharashtra.
Niral Patel & Associates, since its inception, has grown steadily in the architectural industry. We have been able to secure industrial, commercial, and residential projects, with a particular focus on municipal liaisoning and design architecture. Our work primarily involves obtaining building permissions from municipal authorities and ensuring that all construction activities comply with regulatory guidelines. This role is crucial in ensuring that projects run smoothly from inception to completion. By acting as a bridge between developers and the government, we eliminate potential bottlenecks and obstacles that could otherwise delay or hinder construction.
Our firm plays a vital role in the market by providing essential services that are often overlooked in the construction industry. We are not only responsible for designing spaces but also for ensuring that they comply with all legal and regulatory standards. This saves developers significant time and resources, as we help them navigate the often complex and bureaucratic approval processes. By focusing on both design and liaisoning, we have created a niche for ourselves in the market, and this is where our unique selling proposition (USP) lies. Our clients can rely on us not only for innovative design solutions but also for ensuring that their projects meet all the necessary legal requirements.
In terms of the impact we have on society, our work goes beyond designing buildings. Every project we take on has the potential to shape the way people interact with their environments. Whether it’s a residential development that provides homes for families or a commercial space that fosters economic growth, we are contributing to the infrastructure of communities. We are also committed to incorporating sustainable design principles into our projects wherever possible, ensuring that we are doing our part in minimizing the environmental impact of our work.
The decision to start my firm was largely influenced by my desire to have greater control over the projects I was working on. While working with other firms gave me valuable experience, I felt restricted by the limitations imposed on me. I wanted to be able to take on projects that aligned with my vision and values, and the only way to do that was by starting my own business. This decision wasn’t easy, but with the support of my family and partner, I took the plunge. Having a strong support system was essential in the early days of my business, as entrepreneurship is often a lonely journey, and having people to lean on can make all the difference.
My family, particularly my parents and close relatives, have been a major source of inspiration for me. Growing up, I watched them navigate the highs and lows of the construction industry with grace and perseverance. Their work ethic and determination have had a lasting impact on me. I have also been inspired by my partner, Hetal Desai, whose confidence in my abilities gave me the push I needed to take the leap into entrepreneurship. Having someone believe in you can make a world of difference, and I am grateful for her support.
The path of entrepreneurship is never without its challenges, and I faced my fair share of struggles when I first started my firm. One of the biggest challenges was building a reputation in a competitive market. Architecture is a field where trust and credibility are paramount, and it takes time to establish both. In the early days, I had to work tirelessly to prove myself and my firm’s capabilities. Another challenge was navigating the bureaucracy involved in getting approvals for projects. The process is often time-consuming and complicated, and I had to learn how to manage these challenges effectively to keep projects on track.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from my entrepreneurial journey is the importance of trust and transparency. In this industry, your reputation is everything, and maintaining the trust of your clients is crucial for long-term success. This means being honest and upfront about any challenges or delays that may arise during a project. I’ve also learned the value of patience. Success doesn’t come overnight, and it’s important to stay focused on your goals, even when things don’t go as planned.
In terms of personal challenges, balancing work and personal life has been one of the toughest aspects of running a business. The demands of entrepreneurship often mean long hours and little time for anything else. However, I’ve learned the importance of taking time for myself and my family. Burnout is a real risk in this line of work, and it’s important to find a balance that allows you to recharge while still meeting the demands of your business.
Starting a business requires not just financial investment but also emotional and mental commitment. One of the essentials for starting my firm was having a strong support system in place. I was fortunate to have my family’s backing, which gave me the confidence to take the risks necessary to grow my business. I also believe that loyalty, both to your clients and your team, is crucial. Building strong relationships with both is essential for long-term success.
The construction industry is constantly evolving, and there are always new opportunities for growth. I recognized early on that there was a gap in the market for a firm that could offer both design and municipal liaisoning services. By filling this gap, we’ve been able to secure a steady stream of projects and build a solid reputation in the industry. There is still so much potential in this market, and I am excited about the future prospects for our business.
As an entrepreneur, I believe my honesty and integrity have set me apart. Clients trust me because they know I will always act in their best interest. This is something I take great pride in. Additionally, my attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work has helped me build a loyal client base. I believe that these qualities, combined with my passion for architecture, are what make me unique as an entrepreneur.
The biggest takeaway from my journey so far is the importance of hard work, persistence, and a positive attitude. There will always be challenges and setbacks, but it’s how you respond to them that determines your success. To anyone starting their own business, my advice is simple: have faith in yourself, be prepared to put in the hard work, and never lose sight of your goals. Success may not come overnight, but with determination and perseverance, it will come.
I believe that the success of my firm and the satisfaction of my clients are the greatest rewards I could ask for. Looking ahead, I am excited about the future of Niral Patel & Associates. We have big plans for expansion and are looking forward to taking on more large-scale projects that will allow us to continue making a positive impact on the industry and the communities we serve.
