Success is not an overnight achievement; it is the product of hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of one’s dreams. The story of Ar. Ashwini Gole, Head Designer at Cristina Interiors, is a testament to how passion and perseverance can transform a vision into reality. Since 2017, Ashwini has been steering the creative direction at Cristina Interiors, a renowned name in the field of luxury residential design. But the journey began much earlier, in 2010, when the foundation of Cristina Interiors was laid by Aftab Mohammad. What followed was a story of innovation, challenges, and growth—a story that not only shaped Ashwini’s career but also contributed significantly to the world of interior design.

Inception of Cristina Interiors

Cristina Interiors was founded in 2010 by Aftab Mohammad, a visionary in the world of design. Based in Mumbai, the company initially set out to offer high-end, luxurious interiors for residential spaces. With its distinctive approach to design and a focus on creating functional yet aesthetically pleasing spaces, Cristina Interiors quickly became a name to reckon with in the industry.

In 2017, Ashwini Gole joined Cristina Interiors as the Head Designer, a role that allowed her to showcase her creativity and design expertise. From this point onward, Ashwini’s vision aligned perfectly with the company’s ethos of creating beautiful, luxurious, yet sustainable spaces. Her ability to blend functional design with cutting-edge trends helped elevate the company’s position in the competitive world of interior design.

Defining the Business: Luxury, Sustainability, and Functionality

Cristina Interiors, under Ashwini’s leadership, specializes in luxury residential projects. The company’s primary focus is to design interiors that are not only luxurious but also budget-friendly, providing high-end solutions without the steep costs usually associated with premium designs.

The design philosophy at Cristina Interiors is built on creating spaces that are highly functional, sustainable, and aesthetically engaging. With increasing awareness about the environment, Ashwini and her team emphasize using sustainable materials and processes. This blend of luxury and sustainability is the company’s unique selling proposition (USP), making it stand out in an increasingly competitive market.

The future prospect of Cristina Interiors looks promising, with the intention to keep expanding and growing while maintaining the quality and uniqueness that the company is known for. Ashwini envisions a future where luxury does not compromise the planet’s well-being, and where every design not only serves its purpose but also helps improve the environment.

The Spark of Creativity

Ashwini’s journey into the world of interior design began with an inherent passion for creativity. She had always been fascinated by the art of transforming spaces and creating environments that evoke emotions. This natural inclination towards creativity encouraged her to pursue a profession in architecture and design.

For Ashwini, the decision to join Cristina Interiors was fueled by a desire to work in an environment that encourages innovation while providing the freedom to experiment with new ideas. The vision to create sustainable, highly functional spaces was in perfect alignment with her personal and professional goals.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

Every entrepreneur faces challenges, and Ashwini’s journey has not been devoid of them. One of the most profound challenges she faced came from a personal loss that impacted her both emotionally and professionally. Losing her father was a setback that left her struggling to concentrate on work. However, this period of grief taught her a powerful lesson: life goes on, and it is important to stay resilient. Her own strength became the driving force that pushed her to persevere through difficult times.

In her professional journey, Ashwini has learned that entrepreneurship is not only about creative skills but also about dealing with uncertainties, balancing budgets, and building relationships with clients. She believes that success in design comes not just from talent but also from persistence and adaptability. “If I can reach here, then nothing can stop me,” she says, illustrating how her personal struggles have made her stronger and more determined in her professional journey.

Identifying Opportunities in the Market

When Ashwini joined Cristina Interiors, the market for interior designers in Mumbai was already saturated with competition. The industry was full of talented professionals, each vying for the same opportunities. Ashwini realized that to stand out, she needed to offer something unique—something that would make Cristina Interiors different from the rest.

She identified that sustainability was an emerging trend that not only appealed to environmentally-conscious clients but also gave designers the opportunity to create innovative, eco-friendly spaces. The shift toward green architecture and sustainable materials allowed Ashwini to explore new design avenues and meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions. Her ability to think beyond conventional design practices and offer creative, sustainable solutions set her apart from other designers in the market.

The Role of Client Psychology in Design

Ashwini firmly believes that understanding client psychology is just as important as having technical skills in architecture and design. “It’s the most important thing to understand what the client wants,” she says. As designers, their role is not just to impose their ideas onto the space but to listen to the client’s needs and preferences and incorporate them into the design. After all, it is the client’s space that they will live in, and understanding their vision is key to creating a harmonious environment.

The process of designing spaces is inherently personal, and Ashwini stresses that listening to the client’s thoughts and aligning with their desires is crucial. Whether it’s through color schemes, furniture choices, or layout configurations, the goal is always to create a space that reflects the client’s personality while maintaining functionality and style.

The First Big Break

Every designer has a project that stands out as a turning point in their career. For Ashwini, it was her very first project, a residential design with a modest budget of 15 lakhs. Despite the limited budget, the project gave her the confidence to pursue bigger, more complex designs. The success of this project marked the beginning of a promising career, and Ashwini realized that with dedication and hard work, there were no limits to what she could achieve.

That first project remains close to her heart because it was not only a learning experience but also a significant milestone in her journey as a designer. It reinforced her belief that every project, no matter how small, holds immense value and can be a stepping stone to greater success.

Sustainable and Green Architecture: A Step Towards the Future

As the world faces the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, the importance of sustainable and green architecture cannot be overstated. Ashwini believes that every designer has a responsibility to contribute to creating spaces that are both beautiful and eco-friendly.

While she has not yet fully explored sustainable architecture, she is committed to making it a central focus of her future projects. “Global warming has had severe side effects on our life, and as designers, we must do our part to mitigate that impact,” Ashwini explains. Moving forward, she plans to integrate sustainable practices into all her designs, utilizing eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions that align with the growing demand for green architecture.

Entrepreneurship and Personal Growth

The journey of an entrepreneur is one of constant learning. Ashwini’s experiences have taught her the importance of resilience, adaptability, and continuous growth. She has learned that success in business requires more than just creativity; it requires hard work, the ability to overcome setbacks, and a willingness to keep learning from every project.

Her advice to aspiring architects and designers is simple yet profound: “This is the most amazing field ever because it’s so creative that you can make a different world out of it if you really work hard.” She encourages young designers to be passionate, dedicated, and always open to learning, as these qualities are essential for success in the ever-evolving world of design.
