My journey as an architect has been an intricate blend of passion, heritage, and a sense of responsibility that has shaped my professional life over the past two decades. Graduating in 2000 from the Reba RIBA in the United Kingdom, I was eager to bring my learning and experience back to India, where I joined Naren Kuwadekar and Associates, an architectural firm that has been a significant player in the Indian architecture scene since 1975. The firm, based out of Mumbai, has a remarkable portfolio, with over 150 million square feet of developed space across the country, encompassing a wide variety of projects.
As the Principal Architect and Director of the firm, I have seen architecture evolve in India, and my role within the firm has grown over time. Our team comprises architects, designers, engineers, and project managers who work collaboratively on a diverse array of projects. Over the past five decades, we have cemented our reputation as one of the leading architecture firms in India, contributing to the urban landscape of Mumbai and several other cities across the country.
My path into the world of architecture was a natural progression. Having spent time working overseas and gaining experience in cities beyond Mumbai, I initially focused on the interior design aspects of our practice. Eventually, I transitioned into handling larger architectural projects, which include multi-story structures, urban rejuvenation initiatives, and redevelopment projects that reshape the face of the city.
Our firm’s work spans a broad spectrum of redevelopment projects, including residential complexes, commercial buildings, entire townships, and educational institutions. At present, our most prominent efforts are in citywide rejuvenation through the redevelopment of existing societies, the rehabilitation of institutional buildings, and the transformation of aging educational infrastructures. We have also partnered with the government to reconstruct and rehabilitate government staff quarters and institutional buildings. The breadth of our work is nationwide, but our home city of Mumbai stands as a key hub of our most iconic projects.
Among our notable contributions are landmarks like the Taj Lands End in Mumbai, Kingdom of Dreams in Delhi, Jamnabai School in Mumbai, MIT Gurukul in Pune, and GIFT City in Gujarat. These projects represent not only our commitment to architectural excellence but also the immense impact architecture can have on society, both visually and functionally. Every project we undertake becomes a part of the city’s fabric, potentially outlasting the lifetimes of those who designed it. The responsibility to create sustainable, safe, and socially responsible structures is one we hold in the highest regard.
Our firm has specialized in a range of architectural undertakings, from high-rise structures to sustainable townships and redevelopment efforts. The combination of working on both micro and macro-scale projects allows us to apply a wide-ranging skill set to meet the varying needs of our clients. Whether it’s a luxury hotel or a sprawling residential township, our approach is always rooted in ensuring client satisfaction and making a positive impact on society.
One of the key strengths of our firm is our ability to manage the complexities of urban rejuvenation and redevelopment projects. These are often long-term endeavors, requiring meticulous planning, coordination with multiple stakeholders, and adherence to regulatory compliances. In this sense, we are not just architects but also stewards of the urban environment, tasked with preserving the old while ushering in the new. Sustainability is a critical factor in our work, as we strive to ensure that our projects are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible.
Our practice has grown in response to the demand for more sustainable architecture. There is a clear shift in the market towards creating buildings that minimize their carbon footprint and utilize energy more efficiently. This change in focus reflects a broader awareness among clients and communities about the importance of sustainability, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement. Energy consumption, green building practices, and the integration of technology into our designs are all areas we are constantly exploring and improving upon.
The future of our business is bright, fueled by the growing need for redevelopment and expansion, particularly in India’s tier-two and tier-three cities. The spotlight on the Indian architectural market from international investors and developers is only intensifying, which positions us well for continued growth in the coming decades. I foresee a natural progression in the scope and scale of our work, as cities across the country continue to evolve and modernize.
The passion I have for architecture runs deep, stemming from a rich family heritage. My father, a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects, played a crucial role in shaping my early understanding of the field. My maternal uncle, the renowned architect Achut Kanvinde, also had a profound influence on me. Architecture, it seems, is in my blood, but it is my personal drive and passion for the craft that has kept me motivated through the years.
Being an entrepreneur in the field of architecture presents its own set of challenges. Compliance with regulatory standards, timely delivery of projects, quality control, and the ever-evolving nature of technology in our field require constant attention. However, I have been fortunate to partner with talented individuals who share my vision. Every project presents new challenges, but each also offers a learning opportunity that enables us to refine our approach for the next project.
The challenges of architecture extend beyond the technical and logistical. There is an emotional and social aspect to creating spaces where people live, work, and interact. The structures we design will stand for generations, and the responsibility to create something that is not only functional but also meaningful is one that I take very seriously. The impact of a building on its surroundings and its community is immense, and we must always be mindful of how our designs will affect the lives of the people who use them.
Sustainability is one of the key trends shaping the future of architecture, and it is an area that I am particularly passionate about. Buildings that are energy-efficient, utilize renewable resources, and minimize their carbon impact are no longer just an option; they are becoming a necessity. As architects, we have a duty to respond to the environmental challenges of our time, and I am committed to making sustainability a central pillar of our work. Whether it’s through the materials we use, the energy systems we incorporate, or the overall design philosophy we adopt, we are always looking for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of our projects.
At the same time, technology is playing an increasingly important role in architecture. From the use of advanced software in the design phase to the integration of smart technologies in the buildings themselves, the way we approach architecture is evolving rapidly. Staying at the cutting edge of these advancements is crucial to maintaining our competitive edge and delivering the best possible results for our clients.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the possibilities that the future holds. The architecture landscape in India is undergoing a transformation, driven by the need for urban rejuvenation, sustainable development, and innovative design solutions. As cities expand and new challenges emerge, I believe that our firm is well-positioned to continue making significant contributions to the field.
As we move forward, I am committed to continuing the work that has defined my career—designing innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible buildings that meet the needs of our clients while contributing to the broader urban landscape. The challenges are many, but the opportunities are even greater, and I look forward to seeing what the next chapter of my architectural journey will bring.
